The Castle Atop the Sea

the fat red whale
in the sparseness of the sea
watched the castle atop the sea and sang
singing
it’s a lovely castle
the castle in the sea
it rose up from nowhere
it’s for you and me
no one lives there
and there’s no furniture
there’s no tapestries
and there’s no rugs
the only things in the castle
are the mirrors of your eyes
looking into the mirrors
of other peoples’ eyes
funny that
in relation to the bulbous blue moose
in the partially devoured forest
shambling around the ark
stuck in among the trees
singing
it’s a lovely boat
the boat in the woods
it landed here from nowhere
it’s for all our good
no one captaining the boat
there is nothing in it
the only thing in the boat
is the boat itself
and the same under a hot sun
in a moon crater
in the desert
a purple snake singing in its sleep
singing
it’s a lovely moon
that once was here
and sat itself in the crater
and told us how we’re
the only ones left at all
and that no one lived on the moon
and the only thing on the moon
was the future of Earth
